ahhhhhh the show is tomorrow!

What a busy day we have had! All tech is done, including the moving projector which is no mean feat! We even did our first full run which was a success. With only a few tweaks to sort we will be ready to rock for the first show tomorrow.

As a devising technique, the company wrote a few lines on their first day at university and what future means to them. They have all influenced the show but we thought it might be interesting for you to have a little sneaky look.

‘I did have plans, I was going to complete my degree. Complete my PGCE, then get a job as a teacher. Now it's all in a weird kind of limbo. I don't even know if I will complete my degree, never mind what happens afterwards. I just try not to think about it.’

‘Looking into the future I think, shit. Shit it’s going to be expensive and that’s shit. I’ve always had somewhere to make theatre, somewhere with everything I need. In five months I will have graduated and won’t have somewhere to make theatre, somewhere with everything I need. Shit, it’s going to be expensive.’

‘Id arrived. Suitcases unpacked and memories put away. It was the start of a new adventure, moving away and leaving my mum. She’s always been there and leaving was hard, but looking back leaving has changed me. I’ve grown up. Arriving in a new place can be scary, freedom can be dangerous and unfamiliar surroundings are daunting. Id arrived. I didn’t worry about making friends or what if people didn’t like me, I was too upset, excited and anxious. Id really left and needed time to adjust.’

We hopefully will update you will a few videos of the cast all suited and booted in costume before the show, see you tomorrow!

How did we start?

Hello hello,
Today has been a highly productive one, we have rehearsed, we have devised, we have made and put up. There is still a lot we still have to do, but it all seems to be coming together nicely now, which is good considering the first show is on Thursday!

I don’t want to say to much about what we have made or put up as I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but I will share with you the starting idea of he show and how we started the devising process.

That Day originally stemmed from the notion that the Theatre course is in the process of moving to the Hull campus, to which the company are the last year group to go graduate in Scarborough. The company wanted to mark this occasion, doing what they are passionate about.

The process started by using a combination of devising games, mind mapping on large pieces of paper, movement exercises and research that all surrounded leaving. The company spent a lot of time creating texts, either from exercises such as free writing and free speaking. Some of the texts are autobiographical and some are based on the stories of others whether it from someone moving to study abroad or a refugee.

Tomorrow its another day of rehearsals and tech and maybe some sneak peaks of the show.

See you tomorrow!

A little introduction...

So That Day is in four days and for all you lucky people that have found our blog, we will be giving you some daily updates. This includes anything from how things are going in the rehearsal room, what the technical team are doing, sneaky peeks of the show or just some general musings on leaving!

For those of you who don't know, the third year Theatre students at Hull University, Scarborough Campus are making their last full ensemble piece with the nationally recognised Rachael Walton of Third Angel.

That Day explores the notion of leaving a place, saying good bye and the fear of the new, the company have been experimenting with sound, video, performance and dance to create a truly special multi – media experience across all three of the University’s performance spaces.

This is a piece for anybody who has had to say good bye and start afresh, from the solider on his first billing to the refugee forced to leave his country, from a university student off to college to the mother left behind.

So what did we do today?

Everything is very busy at the minute, as you would expect with only four days to go. The technical team are hard at work bringing to life all their designs. All we will say is... suitcases, bamboo and a lot of string.

The performers looked at the first section of the show and finalised the text and movement which went swimmingly. It took us a tad longer than expected but you can't rush a good thing (and we think its pretty good so far).

Tomorrow we will be looking at the middle section of the show and doing lots and lots of tech as it’s the get in! So we have our hard hats and steel toecap boots at the ready.

Just a little side note, tickets are still free but are going fast. Thursday 26th February is now completely full but there are still eight tickets left for Friday 27th February so ring 07961251632 to reserve yours today!

See you tomorrow!
